In 2020, more than 3,600 VITA sites prepared over 1.1 million tax returns which generated over $1.7 billion in refunds to low- and moderate-income households. Additionally, participating VITA sites maintained a 94% accuracy rate—one of the highest in the industry. In addition to helping low- and moderate-income tax filers access tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC), VITA also helped these filers secure Economic Impact Payments and navigate filing challenges brought on by income shifts due to the pandemic. Last year, thanks to your ongoing advocacy efforts, VITA was funded at $30 million for fiscal year 2021. This is the maximum federal funding allowed for the VITA program through the VITA Permanence Act--$5 million more than the previous year. Keeping VITA funded at $30 million would help programs hire new staff to coordinate the program, add new VITA sites, substantially improve volunteer recruitment and increase outreach efforts to low-income households.
