The government tore thousands of children from their parents – including babies and toddlers – with little or no warning. Neither the children nor parents knew why they were being separated and where their families had been taken. The government did not tell them when – or even if – they would see each other again.

Leading medical associations and doctors have publicly denounced family separation, citing long-term, harmful effects on children's emotional growth and cognitive development. Separated parents, meanwhile, face an increased risk of developing mental health disorders, with trauma linked to severe anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

ACLU Supporter, this is why we're seeking damages in our new lawsuit. We're also seeking the creation of a fund to pay for professional mental health services for affected families.
