In his first days in office, Donald Trump made good on his racist and xenophobic campaign promise to enact a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States” with his Muslim travel ban.

Millions of families were separated overnight without knowing when they'd see each other again. World leaders condemned the United States for installing such a divisive, insulting, and discriminatory policy. Muslim Americans were made to feel that they didn't belong. And the execution of the policy was a chaotic mess built on racism and fear. Trump made us look cowardly and hateful in the eyes of the world.

Now House Democrats have passed legislation to make sure it will never happen again.

As The Hill reports, “the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act ... would explicitly prohibit religious discrimination in immigration-related decisions. Any immigration restrictions could only be issued by the executive branch if there is a ‘compelling government interest.'”

Passing this bill in the Senate will be difficult. GOP Senator Andy Biggs is arguing that presidents should have absolute power to make discriminatory decisions -- and Trump is already urging Biden to reinstate his ban.
