The Supreme Court just announced that it will take on a case about abortion for the first time since President Trump nominated two justices to the Supreme Court. The court will be reviewing an abortion restriction in Louisiana — a restriction that's nearly identical to one of the Texas restrictions struck down by the Supreme Court in Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt just three years ago.
In Whole Woman's Health, the Supreme Court decided that laws like this one in Louisiana had no purpose other than to make abortion more difficult to access. By granting review in this case, the Supreme Court is agreeing to reconsider its own landmark decision — and if the court allows this Louisiana law to stand, it will be breaking with its own precedent and dismantling constitutional protections to abortion access. This case could decide the future of abortion access in this country.
As abortion access comes under attack, this is no time to back down. We need to fight back with everything we've got in order to protect our rights.
And we need you with us. Help Planned Parenthood Action Fund protect access to safe, legal abortion — whenever and wherever it's under attack. Rush your urgent gift right now.
Relying on the courts to protect our rights is harder than ever, as the Trump administration and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rapidly fill the federal bench with judges who will decide our health and rights. In fact, it was a year ago this week that we watched in horror as just 50 senators voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court.
If the Supreme Court allows this Louisiana law to stand now, it will be defying precedent and could make the protections of Roe virtually meaningless. This case could pave the way for states to take the right to abortion away from 25 million people of reproductive age.
We can't let that happen. Make an urgent gift to Planned Parenthood Action Fund now: Your gift will help us fight back against continued attacks on our reproductive health and rights, and so much more.
Today's news, coupled with the anniversary of Kavanaugh's confirmation this weekend, serves as a bone-chilling reminder of just how fragile our rights and freedoms really are.
Thank you for staying in this fight. I trust you'll be with us for as long as it takes.
