I want to be honest with you, John.
As the Executive Director of Women’s March, it’s my job to steward our organizational goals and make sure we’re leveraging the power of this movement to lift up all women in our country. Another critical part of my job is being candid and frank about our finances.
Here’s the situation: Yesterday, we had a meeting about our fundraising numbers and we realized that we’re 30% behind what we typically raise in a month.
I’m seriously worried about this dip in our fundraising and how it’ll affect our team’s ability to grow our organizing programs and prepare for the next election cycle. But honestly, it also just worries us that ever since we defeated Trump, folks in our base may not feel the need to stay involved in politics. We cannot allow a win, no matter the size, to lull us into a false sense of security. From the voter suppression laws that were recently passed in Georgia, to the crises of police brutality and white supremacy in our country — there is ample evidence that our hard work isn’t over yet.
John, that’s why today I’m humbly asking you to make a donation to Women’s March so we can catch up on our fundraising and reach our $86,000 end-of-month goal by this Friday. I’ll explain why your donation is critical in making sure Women’s March can continue organizing for bold change in our politics in the rest of this email.
Let me start by saying this: I know that this movement is capable of moving mountains — because I’ve seen you all do it before. I’m immensely proud of all the Women’s Marchers who joined the fight of our lives last election to defeat Trump and turn the tides of this country.
Women, particularly women of color, are the reason why Trump lost, and I know that women will be the ones who continue leading bold change in our country. Let’s not take our foot off the gas and lose momentum. Our team recently reached out to all of our supporters to take our Organizing Priorities Survey and share what issues you all think Women’s March should focus on next. Here are some of the results we found:
It was inspiring to see how many of you took the time to share your thoughts about what programs you want Women’s March to grow and the issues you think we should prioritize in our work. But the harsh reality we’re facing now is that it takes significant resources to put these goals into action.
That’s why it’s especially concerning that our fundraising is lower than usual, John. We’re relying on grassroots donations from emails like this one to make sure we have the funding it takes to win more elections and pass the progressive legislation we need. Pundits are forecasting a significant Republican backlash in 2022. The only way to be prepared for that is to start working now.
Let’s do this,
Rachel Carmona
