Dear Friend,
In just the last few days the DC Rent Control Coalition launched a new campaign to Reclaim Rent Control and our allies at Sanctuary DMV unveiled a major win with the upcoming introduction of the the Sanctuary Values Act. Want to learn how to get plugged into these campaigns? Read on ⬇️
Reclaim Rent Control
The Reclaim Rent Control campaign launched this week calling for the end of abusive practices that reward landlords for neglecting rental housing. Tenants unions, community groups, and labor unions came together under the crumbling conditions of 220 Hamilton to call for expanded and strengthened rent control. Simply re-authorizing rent control isn’t enough, it keeps us locked in the housing crisis and will ensure that landlords continue to deplete our supply of rent-controlled units. We need to dramatically expand the units covered under rent control, and make it harder to convert them into market-rate housing. Join us in the fight for housing October 26th at the Rally to Reclaim Rent Control.
Rally to Reclaim Rent Control Where: Lamont Plaza, 3258 Mt Pleasant St NW, Washington, DC 20010
When: Saturday, October 26 @ 3:00 PM RSVP HERE Find out more about the campaign
The Sanctuary Values Act
Our allies at Sanctuary DMV won a major victory yesterday! In August, the Washington City Paper revealed that the DC Jail has been helping ICE detain DC residents by notifying ICE when immigrants are being released so ICE can come and detain them – and by giving ICE agents special access inside the jail. On October 8th the DC Council will introduce the Sanctuary Values Act which would ban all of these practices so that DC stops turning over its own residents to immigration authorities. The Council was given notice of the emergency bill today and will vote on it Tuesday, October 8th. Sanctuary DMV need your solidarity ensure this bill becomes law. Please contact DC Councilmembers to vote for the bill and canvass with Sanctuary DMV this weekend to gather community support.
In solidarity,
Elizabeth Falcon
