Dear John,

When politicians breach the public trust, you need a way to give them the pink slip.

Recall legislation allows you to launch a petition and, if it gets the required number of signatures, go to the ballot box to decide whether to recall a politician in a byelection.

Recall legislation at the federal level would put more power in your hands. Constituents wouldn’t have to wait until the next election to decide whether to re-elect an MP. And there’s a long list of examples where recall would have been useful.

Marwan Tabbara, a current Member of Parliament, was arrested and charged with four criminal offenses, including assault and criminal harassment, in April of 2020. He was removed from the Liberal Party caucus that June, but he’s still collecting a six-figure MP paycheque almost a year later.

Former MP Dean Del Mastro was charged with violations under the Canada Elections Act that ultimately led to a jail sentence. Del Mastro was removed from the Conservative caucus in 2013, but waited more than a year after being criminally charged before resigning.

As a voter, shouldn’t you have the right to decide whether a politician can continue to represent you? As the boss, shouldn’t you always have the right to fire politicians, rather than waiting years for the next election?

Could you help us push for federal recall legislation? Please take a minute to sign our PETITION.

In a democracy, the people should be in charge, and you should always have the right to hold politicians accountable.

British Columbia has had recall legislation for more than two and a half decades, and Alberta just introduced a recall law.

It’s time that we had recall elections at the national level.

Thanks for stepping up to fight for greater accountability!

Sincerely,
  • Jay, Aaron, Shannon, Todd and the rest of the CTF team.
