We need to reckon with an uncomfortable new reality: According to DCCC Chairman Sean Patrick Maloney, far-right extremists like Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene are “driving the decision making” of the modern Republican Party.
It's hard to argue with Chairman Maloney. Radicals like Greene, Lauren Boebert, and Matt Gaetz have advanced the Big Lie that Donald Trump won the 2020 election. But when it came time to vote to certify the election results, Republican leaders like Kevin McCarthy fell in line with them, not the other way around.
We've seen the rot of racism and xenophobia spread from the fringes of the party straight up to its leadership. We saw it with Trump, who perpetrated hateful rhetoric about people of color and did everything he could to make life more difficult for the most disenfranchised Americans. And his continued influence will only help once-fringe figures like Marjorie Taylor Greene dominate the Republican Party.
It's vital to the security of AAPI Americans and all people of color that we defeat this kind of hate in 2022.
