Dear John,
Today is Workers Memorial Day – a time when we pause to remember those who have suffered and died on the job. On this solemn occasion please join me for a moment of silence today Wednesday, April 28 at 12 p.m. your local time as we remember those we have lost.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, unions and our allies stepped into action to protect worker safety. We held agency leaders accountable to enforce the law. We won protections for members, including personal protective equipment, ventilation and training. But even with our significant victories as a labor movement, we've lost and continue to lose too many working people to COVID-19 and other workplace hazards.
Under the law, every employer is responsible for providing a safe workplace. But each year, thousands of people are killed and millions more get sick or are injured from preventable workplace hazards because employers don’t fulfill their obligation under the law. That’s why it’s so important that workers have a strong union at the worksite through which we can advocate for life-saving health and safety protections. Our voice on the job could mean the difference between life and death.
That’s why it’s so important we pass the PRO Act, taking power away from big corporations and wealthy special interests and giving it back to the people. It’s long past time we gave working Americans a fair chance to secure their voice at work – a voice they can use to protect themselves, and each other.
Worker safety and worker voices go hand in hand. And that’s why on this Workers Memorial Day, we are asking our senators to vote YES on the PRO Act.
Today, we remember. Today, we act.
In Solidarity,
Dr. Everett Kelley
