Moderna is holding its annual shareholder meeting today and celebrating its bumper financial outlook. The company is expecting to earn $18.2 billion in revenue from its Covid-19 vaccine in 2021, with an estimated $5 billion in profit.

These amounts are astronomical especially considering that the vaccine has been completely publicly funded by the US government. This should have been a People’s Vaccine to help end the pandemic for all countries and yet it is now just a profit vaccine as Moderna has sold almost all of its doses to rich countries.

The words: AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna have become familiar to all of us as we use them to describe which vaccine our loved ones or ourselves are receiving as part of the NHS roll out but sadly this is not a global roll-out - just 0.2% of global vaccinations have taken place in low-income countries.

This is because stocks are limited by pharmaceutical monopolies - big pharma is not sharing vaccine blueprints and jealously guarding its patents so other companies are unable to join in with the manufacturing efforts and help ramp up supply for the global south.
Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel has personally gained immense wealth out of this publicly-funded vaccine and since the pandemic has cashed out over $142 million in Moderna stock. He’s now a billionaire (worth $5.2 billion).

The Moderna vaccine should be a People’s Vaccine to benefit the whole world and not just a privatised asset controlled by one company to boost shareholder value and executive wealth.
