Rural Country Life News DONATE 916-312-3008 [email protected] edcdems.org LEGISLATION WE NEED: BROADBAND FOR ALL By Joy Sterling • Chair of the California Democratic Party Rural Caucus Chair Catastrophic wildfires and now the pandemic have exposed the widening chasm that is California’s urban/rural “digital divide” that adversely impacts public safety, education, healthcare, and our livelihoods. We have relied on the U.S. telecommunications industry to meet our broadband needs, utilizing a privatized Single Provider Access network model, overseen by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), whereby one major provider ends up serving a given geographic area. This model actively reduces competition in communities and comes close to creating a monopoly. ... CONTINUE EL DORADO COUNTY VEGETATION MANAGEMENT ORDINANCE By Mary Elliott-Klemm, Member El Dorado County Fire Safety Committee Fire season is almost upon us. On May 30, 2019 El Dorado County adopted a Vegetation Management Ordinance, which was revised in February 2020. This article will tell you: What the ordinance is. * What happened during its first year of implementation. * The areas that are slated for inspection in 2020. * How you can be compliant, keep your home safe, and avoid fines. ... CONTINUE BUILDING A WRITERS ALLIANCE We are forming a writers alliance and invite you to join us. Our Writers Alliance will be dedicated to responding to events in the news and the actions or inactions of our legislators. We want to see items published that discuss progressive solutions to community problems, offer well-thought-out commentary on the important issues of the day, and, in general, put the Democratic point of view out there. To do this, our primary activity will be submitting letters to the editor for publication in newspapers. We also plan to increase our social media presence and work toward writing and submitting opinion articles. The Writers Alliance is a multi-county effort, composed of different task groups working on various aspects of this project. The plan is to have one or more coordinators in each county to guide the work of their county’s task groups. The county coordinators will work together to organize and support the task groups. Each county unit will have five task groups—writers, researchers, editors, responders, and a social media team. Writers, with the support of the other task groups, will generate original content to comment on news events and the work of public officials. Our writers will also work on advancing progressive policy initiatives through letters, op-ed and viewpoint articles, and social media posts. Researchers will help find and develop talking points on designated policy issues and provide our writers with the evidence they need to make factual arguments. Editors will assist writers by reviewing and editing work as needed. Our Social Media Team will help get the word out by posting published and unpublished pieces on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. Responders will post supportive comments for published letters and/or social media posts by commenting on newspaper sites and social media. Working as a unit, we can place our message in multiple sites to reach our target audiences of Democrats, unaffiliated Liberals/Progressives, and the No Party Preference voters who are open to solutions rather than partisan rhetoric and rancor.
