John --
If there's one thing Republicans should have learned by now, it's that coming after Stacey Abrams without doing your homework is going to end poorly.
Stacey was recently invited to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee about voting rights. Republican Sen. John Kennedy challenged her to name specific problems with Georgia's new voter suppression law -- and he was NOT ready for her response. Here were just a few of her concerns:
+ Shortens the federal run-off period from nine weeks to four weeks
+ Restricts the time a voter can request and return an absentee ballot application
+ Requires that a voter has a photo ID in order to vote absentee
+ Shortens voting time windows and allows counties to limit voting hours
Most importantly, Stacey testified to the racist nature of these kinds of laws. ID requirements most often place a burden on people of color. The shortened voting windows discriminate against working class people, who are overwhelmingly people of color.
We cannot lose sight of the common thread between all these new voter suppression laws in America: They prevent people of color from exercising their right to vote.
We need allies like Stacey Abrams in the fight against voter suppression -- and here at ASPIRE, we're working to elect them.
We've fallen short of our daily fundraising goal every day this week. We need your help to get back on track today and elect Democrats who will fight back against these voter suppression tactics -- like Stacey Abrams. Can you chip in $10 to get us to our goal? >> [link removed]
