The final count is in. This week, the U.S. Census Bureau announced the official 2020 population count -- and what it means for our maps.

The census count dictates how the 435 U.S. House seats are allocated among states. This week the Census Bureau released updated stats and we learned exactly which states will gain or lose a district on their congressional maps.

Map of America highlighting states that either lost or gained congressional seats.

Highlights from Apportionment Day:
→ Texas made the biggest population gain -- it’s the only state in the nation gaining two new seats.
→ AOTL target states Colorado, Florida, and North Carolina will all gain one new seat each.
→ Ohio and Pennsylvania are the only target states losing a seat.
→ The four new seats across TX, FL, and NC -- and their 80 seats total -- will be highly susceptible to gerrymandering because the conservatives who control redistricting in these states haven’t shown any real desire to pursue true fairness in our democracy -- just look at the voter suppression bills they’ve sponsored.

We see redistricting as an opportunity to ensure our maps accurately reflect our communities. Map manipulators see it as a chance to cherry pick their electorate and guarantee their party some easy reelections.

Help us stop gerrymandering → make a $5 monthly donation in honor of the five new districts in our target states.

Apportionment Day marks a moment in the redistricting process when some conceptual planning ends. This is a shift and our work is entering its next phase. These numbers from the Census Bureau are essential to the map drawing process -- it’s the first key step to making sure the maps reflect our communities.

Can we count on your ongoing support? We’re hoping to get 500 people to commit to a monthly $5 donation now until the maps are all finalized.

Grassroots donors are the foundation of building a strong movement. We appreciate when supporters can make a recurring donation, but we understand that’s not always in the cards. If you would like to make a one time donation, here’s a link to do so: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/apportiontmentday_email

Thanks for your support!
