Today, we sued [[link removed]] Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on behalf of a diverse coalition of faith and civic engagement organizations to block the implementation of SB 202.
Senate Bill 202, recently signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp, is a continuation of Georgia’s heinous history of voter suppression aimed at diminishing the political power of people of color. The bill not only erects new barriers to voting that will disproportionately disenfranchise Black and Brown Georgians, but also takes aim at the engines of democracy that helped make unprecedented change in 2020: the Black Church and the civic organizations serving the Latinx community.
If implemented, the new law would:
*
Ban
mobile
polling
places
effectively
used
to
help
Black
and
Brown
communities
vote
safely
during
the
pandemic,
*
Allow
election
officials
to
eliminate
Sunday
voting,
the
day
in
which
many
Black
churches
host
Souls
to
the
Polls
and
Soy
Georgia
events,
*
Makes
it
harder
for
Georgians
with
disabilities
to
vote
*
And
criminalize
providing
food
and
water
to
those
waiting
in
long
lines,
a
common
practice
employed
by
the
plaintiffs.
In partnership with the Samuel Dewitt Proctor Conference [[link removed]] , Mijente [[link removed]] , GA Latino Alliance for Human Rights (GHLAR), [[link removed]] Faith in Action Georgia [[link removed]] , and a coalition of Black churches, we are litigating to thwart the implementation of the new law.
Standing together in unity, our coalition refuses to be silenced. We will continue to raise our voices to fight for free, fair and accessible elections.
