Dear John,

Expanding rights for workers in the gig economy, whether they are writers, designers, or Uber and Lyft drivers, has long been a focus of my work on the City Council. And then Covid hit and raised the stakes even higher, as independent workers of all kinds struggled to get unemployment, health care, and paid time off.

As a longtime partner to freelancers and independent contractors, I hosted virtual town halls last spring to help independent workers navigate the assistance in the CARES Act and fought for paid sick leave for misclassified workers. And now as we begin the work to help our city recover, I'm continuing to work on proposals that will help raise the floor for workers in the gig economy, including introducing legislation this week to provide a minimum wage to delivery workers.

I'm proud to have the Freelancers Union endorsement in this campaign, and we're inviting you to join tomorrow's town hall with the Freelancers Union discussing the future of freelance work in New York City. [[link removed]]

We'll cover issues including portable benefits, worker misclassification, the Freelance isn't Free Act, combatting wage theft, and more, and discuss your ideas about how we can ensure New York City is a place where independent workers of all kinds can thrive.

You can submit a question in advance of the forum by emailing [email protected], and we'll be taking questions during the conversation on Wednesday too.

Hope to see you there!

Brad
