Hello --
Greta Thunberg, the global climate activist from Sweden who Donald Trump mocked on Twitter, will be visiting our great state today to participate in a student-led protest in Iowa City.
As a father and former teacher, I am thrilled to see young people like Greta fight for the future of our planet. Greta's activism, along with the grassroots efforts of so many here in Iowa and across the country, gives me hope.
So let's welcome Greta to Iowa today -- and thank her for helping to spark a youth-led movement across the globe that has put climate change deniers like Donald Trump and Joni Ernst on notice. Add your name and sign the welcome card today.
Today's protest in Iowa City is being led by students from the local school districts, students who have been organizing their peers for the past three years in response to the evolving global calamity of climate change.
The students have already made incredible strides for our community, successfully pressuring the Iowa City School Board and Council to assess their carbon footprints and take action in reducing it. The University of Iowa has also joined the movement, declaring that their campus will be 100% coal free by 2025.
Our students thanked Greta for her efforts and for her spirit which has emboldened them to demand action on climate change. In her speech to the United Nations, Greta noted that our leaders have consistently failed to take action on climate change, often because of corporate influence and partisan politics.
I'm not taking a dime of corporate PAC money. I'm a former educator who believes in science. I don't owe special interests anything.
So, you can be darn sure that when I'm in the U.S. Senate, I'll take the bold action that is needed to save our planet, transition to renewable energy and the good-paying, green energy jobs of the future.
But first, let's welcome Greta to the Hawkeye State and let all the young people who are fighting for climate action know that we are with them in this fight.
Thank you,
Eddie Mauro
