I needed to reach out to you today. I have been asked a lot lately why I weighed in on the governor's race in Virginia.
The answer is simple: Jennifer Carroll Foy is an inspirational candidate and I’m confident her commitment to working families, especially moms, is second to none in the race for governor.
Jennifer is facing a critical budget deadline at the end of this week. And it’s the first deadline since voting started in Virginia. I’m personally asking you to chip in and help her team continue to connect with voters statewide.
Black Maternal Health Week was earlier this month. Both Jennifer and I share a deep commitment to tackle the Black maternal mortality crisis and fight for working families.
She also knows what it’s like to shoulder the cost of childcare and to face a healthcare system that diminishes the concerns of Black women.
I speak with unwavering confidence that Jennifer will continue to be a steadfast fighter for working families across the Commonwealth as the next Governor of Virginia.

Jennifer Carroll Foy was born and raised in Petersburg. In 2017, she flipped a Republican district as a first-time candidate pregnant with twins. During her time as Delegate, Jennifer championed the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, helped expand Medicaid to 400,000 Virginians, and advocated for the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable communities.
She has a career of public service and it started long before 2017. As a public defender, Jennifer helped give a voice to the often voiceless — children, people suffering from addiction, those experiencing homelessness, those with mental illness, and the poor.
Now she’s running to be the first woman elected Governor of Virginia and serve as the first Black woman to be governor nationwide.
