Any day now the Senate is expected to release a bipartisan package of public safety reforms that will set the stage for a showdown in Congress over an initial step in transforming public safety across the country. But unless your senators hear from you about the types of reforms that are needed, it may not be as robust as it should.
We need 10,000 new signatures by midnight on Wednesday to help increase the momentum to get a robust reform bill passed!
While state and local officials have begun to evaluate changes to policing that will work best in their communities, it is the responsibility of our federal government to set a standard for justice, anti-racist policing, and safety in America. It is long past time for legislation to be passed that would address these problems at the federal level, and it’s imperative that the Senate act immediately in a meaningful way.
For years, elected officials have ignored the demands of activists across the country about the need to reimagine public safety in our communities, and as long as those demands go unmet Black and brown communities have continued to suffer from racist police violence. That must end NOW.
While the bill isn’t a comprehensive solution to all the problems within our public safety and justice system, it is an important first step in that process and we cannot accept anything less.
