As a lethal pandemic, economic and physical insecurity, and violent conflict ravaged the world, democracy’s defenders sustained heavy new losses in their struggle against authoritarian foes, shifting the international balance in favor of tyranny.

Freedom House's annual Freedom in the World

report found that the Asia-Pacific region faced growing threats to freedom of expression and assembly in 2020. Overall freedom in the region declined, as the countries experiencing deterioration outnumbered those with improvements. At the same time, just 6 percent of the population now lives in a Free country, down from 39 percent the previous year.
