ACTION ALERT - ask your MP and Peers in the House of Lords to vote against Northern Ireland Abortion Regulations
Yesterday (Monday 26th April 2021) a Westminster Committee approved controversial legislation which gives the Secretary of State Brandon Lewis power to force the NI Executive to fully commission abortion across Northern Ireland. Read full story here...
The First Delegated Legislation Committee debated Mr Lewis’ abortion regulations and passed them by 13 votes to 3.
The House of Lords will vote on the Abortion Regulations tomorrow (Wednesday 28th April 2021) and the regulations are expected to return to the House of Commons on Thursday.
The Abortion (Northern Ireland) Regulations 2021 will give Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Brandon Lewis the power to force Northern Ireland Ministers, departments and health bodies to kill more unborn babies. The Regulations need to be approved by both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
If passed, Westminster will be ignoring devolution and taking power to override the Stormont Assembly. Brandon Lewis should not be interfering in a devolved matter when the NI Assembly is up and running.
TAKE ACTION
Contact your MP and also Peers in the House of Lords
You can find their contact details by filling in your postcode on the WriteToThem website. You can send an email directly from website.
In your own words tell them :
- Abortion is a devolved issue in Northern Ireland and that these Regulations are completely inappropriate now that the Assembly has been restored for well over a year
- Westminster should not be treating a devolved Assembly in this deeply disrespectful way. Westminster does not ignore principles of devolution for Scotland and Wales, so they should not for Northern Ireland either
- Ask your MP / Peers to vote against the Abortion (Northern Ireland) Regulations 2021
- Tell your MP / Peers to ask the Government to facilitate the repeal of Section 9 of the Executive Formation Act, as the Assembly has now been restored.
