John -- Today is Apportionment Day, the day the Census Bureau releases the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives in the next Congress. Some states are gaining seats and some are losing seats, but now the map makers in every state know for certain how many districts they will be drawing. Today marks a new phase in our fight for fair maps.

Apportionment Day comes at a time of relentless attacks on our democracy. Right now, there are two competing visions of America. One side believes that politicians should decide who wins elections. Our side believes it's the people who should decide.

If you agree, I'm asking you to pitch in toward our $50,000 Apportionment Day Goal to help us fight for the people's right to choose their representatives.

We know power-hungry politicians will try to block fair maps at every turn. That’s why our affiliate, the National Redistricting Action Fund (NRAF), is filing lawsuits in three states to prepare for the potential scenario where map manipulators fail to draw fair maps that reflect the will of the voters -- and those unfair maps are rejected by the state’s governor.

A state’s failure to enact new maps ahead of the 2022 elections would disenfranchise voters. That’s why NRAF’s lawsuits ask the courts to step in and get ready to draw new districts themselves.

Work by the NDRC and its affiliates takes time, coordination, and, yes, money. Can I count on you to chip in to support NDRC’s efforts to end map manipulation?

The next several months will be the most consequential in the NDRC's history. Republican lawmakers will do what it takes to rig maps, whether that means quickly passing newly gerrymandered districts or dragging their feet to allow old maps to stay in place. We’re ready -- achieving our Apportionment Day Goal will help us hit the ground running.
