Hi John,
In case you
missed it, CJ Szafir, President of the Institute for Reforming Government, wrote an op-ed for the Wisconsin State Journal highlighting the
irresponsible structural deficit in Governor Tony Evers’ proposed state budget.
CJ Szafir: Gov. Tony Evers would leave the next budget upside down
In the op-ed, Szafir highlights that Governor Evers’ budget creates a structural deficit of over $1 billion. This means that, while Governor Evers’ budget may have a positive bottom-line number, it is “structured” to leave the next budget upside down. In other words, Governor Evers wants to balloon state spending in order to pay for his liberal wish list and deal with the consequences later at Wisconsinites’ expense.
High structural deficits also hurt taxpayers. As Szafir notes, “when Wall Street and the ratings agencies see a state consistently in the red, they charge higher interest rates when the state borrows. This is particularly important when governors propose significant borrowing, as Gov. Tony Evers has proposed in his capital budget… just think what would happen if you ran your household or your business this way.”
