As if there’s already not enough suffering associated with factory farms, the meat industry wants to genetically engineer animals, so that they are easier raise and slaughter, and require less care and resources in order to maximize profits. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Andrew Wheeler has announced that the agency will aggressively pursue phasing out animal testing by 2035. The new policy approach will apply to mammals (dogs, rabbits, rats, etc.) and birds, but not to fish, who are often used in environmental toxicity tests. EPA has previously worked to modernize toxicity testing by incorporating alternative test methods, but the Administrator's new statement commits the agency to coordinate and accelerate implementation of new non-mammal testing policies. It’s an excellent question, especially when one considers that the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) is the agency charged with upholding the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), a law enacted to protect animals used and exploited by various industries, including breeders, dealers, and laboratories. USDA has reduced transparency and weakened its own oversight, so that it can pander to its “customers” and “partners,” instead of regulating licensed and registered facilities, as mandated by Congress. Meet Honey B, Willy B, and Mave
Last month, our friends at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest (CSNW) welcomed Honey B, Willy B, and Mave to their new home, and we thought you’d like to meet them. The three were born at the same New York lab and spent the past 23 years living at Wildlife Waystation, which closed. Honey B, Willy B, and Mave are currently living separately from the longtime CSNW residents so they can get acquainted with their new surroundings. In the coming weeks, they will all be gradually introduced. Also, longtime CSNW resident Missy is Honey B’s mom, so that introduction will be especially interesting! Through our Sanctuary Fund, and the generosity of our supporters, AAVS has awarded annual grants to CSNW since it first opened its doors to seven former lab chimps over 10 years ago. READ MORE »
