It was an honor to join my friend Joe Kennedy for his virtual event last week. For those of you that don’t know me, I’m Rev. Dieufort Fleurissaint and I’m the chair of the True Alliance Center and Haitian Americans United in Massachusetts.

Most folks call me Pastor Keke.

I’ve been organizing and advocating for Boston’s Haitian-American community for decades. Which is why I’m so excited to be a part of the Democracy HUBS, a new civic engagement effort in Massachusetts really making an impact.

Organizing in communities of color means doing more than parachuting in during election season. It means resourcing those that understand our culture, understand our issues, and allowing those leaders to guide the voter engagement process.

I see and hear it all the time. Voters are surprised to receive a call from their own, people from their own race, speaking to them in their own language. Every day we are breaking down barriers in terms of representation and making engagement accessible to all.
