Multimillionaire Admits To Fatal High-Speed Lamborghini Crash, Awaits Sentencing The son of a wealthy Los Angeles entrepreneur admitted Friday to vehicular manslaughter in connection with a high-speed crash that left a woman dead earlier this year, and could receive probation under the terms of the arrangement. The 17-year-old son of James Khuri — a multimillionaire who owns several real estate firms and an e-commerce business — admitted he was behind the wheel of a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle that slammed into a vehicle driven by 32-year-old Monique Munoz near Olympic Boulevard and Overland Avenue on Feb. 17. The Times normally does not identify juveniles accused of crimes and has not published the teen’s name in this case. Khuri has spoken out in public about his son’s involvement. The teen admitted to one count of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence in Inglewood Juvenile Court and will be confined to his home until his next court date in June. Sentencing will likely take place in August, according to defense attorney Mark Werksman, with the teen facing a range of outcomes from probation to up to nine months in juvenile camp. Even if tried as an adult, the maximum penalty for vehicular manslaughter under California law is six years in custody, but the teen’s lack of a criminal record and age would make that outcome unlikely. Los Angeles Times L.A. Police Shoot Man Wearing Body Armor During Bizarre Confrontation In Hollywood Area Los Angeles police fatally shot a man who was wearing body armor when he drove his car into a police vehicle Saturday in the Hollywood area, authorities said. Officers were responding to a call with their siren and patrol lights on about 2:30 p.m. on Sunset Boulevard near Fairfax Avenue when the suspect pulled his car in front of them, “stopped suddenly & reversed into the police car,” the Los Angeles Police Department tweeted Saturday night. “The driver of the car exited, was wearing body armor, & had his right hand concealed behind him,” the tweet said. “He moved toward the officers who had exited their patrol car. He counted “3, 2, 1" & began to move his arm to the front of his body, at which time there was an OIS,” or officer-involved shooting. Detectives on Friday asked for the public’s help identifying two men suspected of burglarizing businesses throughout West Los Angeles in recent weeks. The men have been targeting restaurants and coffee shops in the string of commercial burglaries, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a news release. All the burglaries usually unfold the same way, police said. When the businesses are closed in the early morning hours, the suspects smash the glass front doors either by kicking them or using rocks or similar objects. They then take the cash from the register, often prying it open using a yellow crowbar, police said. The men then flee the scene in a tan or beige colored four-door sedan, possibly a Nissan Altima, according to the department. LAPD released surveillance video from inside one of the businesses burglarized. The video shows a man smash through the glass door and head for the cash register. He is seen taking what appears to be coins from the register and putting them in his pocket before grabbing merchandise off a shelf and leaving. FOX 11 Woman Arrested In Multi-Vehicle Crash On 101 Freeway That Left 2 Dead, Including 15-Year-Old A 20-year-old woman has been arrested in connection to a four-car crash in Sherman Oaks that left two people dead, including a 15-year-old boy. The California Highway Patrol says Bianca Lopez was driving eastbound on the 101 Freeway near Van Nuys Boulevard when she rear-ended a box truck just after midnight Saturday. She was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. The CHP said alcohol was determined to be a factor in the crash. The impact caused both vehicles to lose control and crash into the center divider wall of the freeway. The box truck then entered the westbound lanes and was struck by an oncoming vehicle. A fourth vehicle, also in the westbound lanes, was struck by concrete debris caused by the destruction of the center divider wall, the CHP said. Authorities say the collisions caused "significant intrusion to the passenger compartment" of the box truck, resulting in the death of two people. A 40-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. FOX 11 After death of baby, S.F. domestic violence victim advocates ask whether Chesa Boudin is doing enough The news itself was crushing. A 7-month-old baby boy named Synciere Williams died Tuesday. The man charged with taking care of him that day, Joseph Williams, 26, was booked by police for allegedly murdering the child. And, it turned out, he’d been arrested twice recently on suspicion of felony domestic violence, in January and March, before being released without charges. But when Kathy Black, the executive director of La Casa de las Madres, a shelter for domestic violence victims in the city, read how District Attorney Chesa Boudin’s office had explained the tragedy, she felt even more devastated. San Francisco Chronicle Domestic Violence Calls Increased Amid The Pandemic – But Answers Haven't Gotten Easier Domestic violence rose globally in 2020 – so much so that doctors have called it “a pandemic within a pandemic.” The National Commission on COVID-19 and Criminal Justice, a team of national experts tasked with assessing the impact of COVID-19 on the justice system, recently estimated that in the United States, domestic violence incidents increased 8.1% on average following stay-at-home orders. Worldwide, the United Nations estimates there was a 20% increase in domestic violence incidents across its 193 member states during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns. We are criminologists with expertise in domestic violence and policing, respectively. To understand whether and how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted calls for help for domestic violence in the U.S., we examined short- and long-term trends in 911 calls about domestic violence after stay-at-home orders in five U.S. cities and one county: Cincinnati, Ohio; Montgomery County, Maryland; New Orleans, Louisiana; Phoenix, Arizona; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Seattle, Washington. In five of the six places – all but Cincinnati – pandemic stay-at-home orders increased domestic violence-related 911 calls. But 911 calls tell only part of the story about how the pandemic affected calls for help for domestic violence. Another forthcoming study shows that emergency hotlines that provide crisis support to victims of domestic violence also saw a sharp uptick in calls. Associated Press PDs Nationwide Struggling With ‘Recruiting Crisis', Surge In Retirements Amid growing calls for police reform and national debate over the deadly use of force, police departments are struggling to retain and attract officers, law enforcement officials say. Across the nation, police officials and union leaders described the state of recruiting as in “crisis” mode. “It’s the perfect storm. We are anticipating that the department is going to be understaffed by several hundred members, because hundreds of guys are either retiring or taking other jobs and leaving the department,” said Mike Neilon, spokesperson for the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #5, the union that represents city police officers. The pandemic has also hampered recruiting efforts, as has the relatively new requirement that police applicants live in the city, Neilon said. “All of that coming together is creating some issues with finding the best and brightest to sign up to be Philadelphia police officers,” he said. When you do, you'll be protecting yourselves and just as importantly, you'll be keeping yourselves healthy so you can continue to support those you love." The department reminded the public that anyone 16 and older living or working in Los Angeles County can get vaccinated without booking an appointment at all county-run vaccination sites while supply lasts (teens 16 and 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian).
