Law Enforcement News Two Men Injured In Chesterfield Square Park Shooting Two men were shot in Chesterfield Square Park in South Los Angeles Friday. The shooting was reported at about 3:35 p.m. at the park at 54th Street and Gramercy Place, according to Officer Jader Chaves of the Los Angeles Police Department Media Relations Division. The two men were in the park when three unidentified suspects approached and shot them before fleeing the scene in a vehicle traveling southbound on Gramercy Place. The two men were taken to a hospital in unknown condition, Chaves said. Their names were not released. There is no known motive for the shooting. MyNewsLA.com Son Of L.A. Multimillionaire Admits To Fatal High-Speed Lamborghini Crash, Awaits Sentencing The son of a wealthy Los Angeles entrepreneur admitted Friday to vehicular manslaughter in connection with a high-speed crash that left a woman dead earlier this year, and could receive probation under the terms of the arrangement. The 17-year-old son of James Khuri — a multimillionaire who owns several real estate firms and an e-commerce business — admitted he was behind the wheel of a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle that slammed into a vehicle driven by 32-year-old Monique Munoz near Olympic Boulevard and Overland Avenue on Feb. 17. The Times normally does not identify juveniles accused of crimes and has not published the teen’s name in this case. Khuri has spoken out in public about his son’s involvement. The teen admitted to one count of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence in Inglewood Juvenile Court and will be confined to his home until his next court date in June. Sentencing will likely take place in August, according to defense attorney Mark Werksman, with the teen facing a range of outcomes from probation to up to nine months in juvenile camp. Even if tried as an adult, the maximum penalty for vehicular manslaughter under California law is six years in custody, but the teen’s lack of a criminal record and age would make that outcome unlikely. Police Shoot Man Wearing Body Armor During Bizarre Confrontation In Hollywood Area Los Angeles police fatally shot a man who was wearing body armor when he drove his car into a police vehicle Saturday in the Hollywood area, authorities said. Officers were responding to a call with their siren and patrol lights on about 2:30 p.m. on Sunset Boulevard near Fairfax Avenue when the suspect pulled his car in front of them, “stopped suddenly & reversed into the police car,” the Los Angeles Police Department tweeted Saturday night. “The driver of the car exited, was wearing body armor, & had his right hand concealed behind him,” the tweet said. “He moved toward the officers who had exited their patrol car. He counted “3, 2, 1" & began to move his arm to the front of his body, at which time there was an OIS,” or officer-involved shooting. The man was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. No weapon was found. The officers were wearing body cameras, and the shooting was captured on video, said Officer Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department. Detectives were still at the scene near West Hollywood late Saturday, conducting interviews and gathering evidence. No other details were immediately available about the shooting. Los Angeles Times Man In Custody After Stealing LAFD Vehicle, Leading Police On Pursuit To San Pedro A man was taken into custody after stealing a Los Angeles Fire Department pickup truck in downtown Los Angeles and leading police on a pursuit that ended in San Pedro on Friday afternoon, April 23, officials said. Los Angeles police were notified that the red, marked vehicle was stolen at Flower and 7th streets at nearly 2 p.m., said Officer William Cooper, a police spokesman. The one-ton pickup truck was equipped with a GPS transponder and, fire officials said, allowed law enforcement to track the vehicle in real-time. The pursuit began after the vehicle was located shortly after in the Rancho Palos Verdes area, where another law enforcement agency pursued the vehicle until Los Angeles police took over the chase in San Pedro, Cooper said. In total, the chase lasted about 45 minutes and ended safely when officers were able to stop the vehicle in a parking lot near Pacific Avenue and Santa Cruz Street, he said. The driver was taken into custody. Los Angeles Daily News LAPD Searching For Suspects In Series Of Commercial Burglaries Throughout West L.A. Detectives on Friday asked for the public’s help identifying two men suspected of burglarizing businesses throughout West Los Angeles in recent weeks. The men have been targeting restaurants and coffee shops in the string of commercial burglaries, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a news release. All the burglaries usually unfold the same way, police said. When the businesses are closed in the early morning hours, the suspects smash the glass front doors either by kicking them or using rocks or similar objects. They then take the cash from the register, often prying it open using a yellow crowbar, police said. The men then flee the scene in a tan or beige colored four-door sedan, possibly a Nissan Altima, according to the department. LAPD released surveillance video from inside one of the businesses burglarized. The video shows a man smash through the glass door and head for the cash register. He is seen taking what appears to be coins from the register and putting them in his pocket before grabbing merchandise off a shelf and leaving. KTLA 5 6-Year-Old Boy Who Went Missing In The Fairfax District Found Safe The search for a missing 6-year-old boy last seen in the Fairfax District was called off after he was found safe, officials said Sunday. Earlier in the day, police asked for the public's help to find the boy. As of 10:30 p.m. Sunday, the missing boy has been found safe, authorities said. No other details were immediately available. Menachem Goldberg went missing on Sunday from the 300 block of North Orange Drive, according to the LAPD. FOX 11 Woman Arrested In Multi-Vehicle Crash On 101 Freeway That Left 2 Dead, Including 15-Year-Old A 20-year-old woman has been arrested in connection to a four-car crash in Sherman Oaks that left two people dead, including a 15-year-old boy. The California Highway Patrol says Bianca Lopez was driving eastbound on the 101 Freeway near Van Nuys Boulevard when she rear-ended a box truck just after midnight Saturday. She was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. The CHP said alcohol was determined to be a factor in the crash. The impact caused both vehicles to lose control and crash into the center divider wall of the freeway. The box truck then entered the westbound lanes and was struck by an oncoming vehicle. A fourth vehicle, also in the westbound lanes, was struck by concrete debris caused by the destruction of the center divider wall, the CHP said. Authorities say the collisions caused "significant intrusion to the passenger compartment" of the box truck, resulting in the death of two people. A 40-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics rushed the 15-year-old boy to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries, the CHP said. I send my deepest condolences to their father, grandmother and other family members and the families of all homicide victims.” On April 10, Joanna, Terry and Sierra Denton were found dead by their grandmother in a small apartment in Reseda. Their mother, 30-year-old Liliana Carrillo, has been charged with their murders and remains in jail. While the Dentons weren’t specifically mentioned in the ICAN report, the study says nearly 1,000 children were killed in Los Angeles County by a parent, a parent’s adult partner, a babysitter or other family member from 1989 to 2018. Detectives from L.A. County's Fraud & Cyber Crimes Bureau Identity Theft detail say Jessica Sanchez was responsible for over $675,000 in EDD benefits by way of ATM cash withdrawals, purchases transfers and teller cash withdrawals. Investigators also say they discovered that Sanchez used a stolen identity, and identified 42 separate Personal Identifying Information profiles from victims that were linked to her. Detectives tracked her to the Knoxville area and contacted authorities there. On Thursday, Knoxville investigators served a search warrant at Sanchez's residence and seized fraudulent debit, credit and gift cards, along with counterfeit credit cards, numerous ledgers containing personal information from additional victims, and a large bag of methamphetamine, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. CBS 2 LA County Reports Drop In COVID-19 Hospitalizations Los Angeles County reported 443 new cases of COVID-19 and 16 additional deaths Saturday, as health officials prepared to resume administration of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines after a pause due to concerns over rare instances of blood clots. The number of coronavirus patients in county hospitals dropped from 453 to 443, according to state figures, while the number of those patients in intensive care fell from 106 to 101. Saturday's numbers brought the county's totals to 1,231,163 cases and 23,775 fatalities since the pandemic began, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. "This virus has caused havoc and pain in our county for too long. However, we now have a way forward to end the pandemic,'' Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said. "It is more important than ever for everyone who is eligible to be vaccinated to look over the information about vaccine safety and make an appointment as soon as you can.
