City Council Meeting

**A message from City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen:**

Cllr David Mellen, leader of Nottingham City Council

At today?s Full Council the new Lord Mayor of Nottingham and Sheriff of Nottingham were formally announced. I?d like to congratulate Councillor Dave Trimble who was named as the Lord Mayor and Councillor Merlita Bryan the new Sheriff. We also agreed the new portfolio holders who will provide political leadership for this council on their areas of responsibility.

I?d like to take this opportunity to give my heartfelt thanks to Councillor Trimble as he steps down from his role as a Leisure and Culture Portfolio Holder. Over the 19 years he has been on the council executive he has championed the major annual events which so many local people hold dear, plus seen our wonderful parks and open spaces receive record numbers of national Green Flags for excellence. Recently he has been instrumental in overseeing the transformation of Nottingham Castle, which we?re excited to see reopen in two months after a ?30m investment.

*Three things we can all do to keep our city safe*

Nottingham skyline

I?m delighted to report that the number of cases of Covid-19 in our city is now the lowest we?ve seen for eight months. This is tremendous news? and I would ask people in Nottingham to continue to do three things to help keep it that way:

* *Take regular tests for Covid-19:* you can do these in your own home, twice a week, to confirm that you are free from the virus. I can?t stress how important this is. You can have Covid-19 ? and spread it to others ? without even knowing. The free test will either give you reassurance that you are Covid-free or otherwise alert you to the presence of the virus and allow you take action immediately. There?s a list of where you can pick up the test kits here: [link removed] [ [link removed] ]
* *Get vaccinated:* when it?s your turn, please have the Covid-19 vaccination. This is our best defence against the virus. Nottingham is now using the national NHS booking system [ [link removed] ] for appointments ? or you can call the NHS on 119. The vaccinations are now available for people aged 44 and over, so do book an appointment if you are eligible
* *Follow the roadmap rules:* Our city is reopening now, but we must still continue to follow the rules ? and we must always think about ?hands, face, space?, whether we are in a shop or on public transport.

Let?s keep going ? if we all work together we can continue to protect each other and see more of city returning to normal.

*Police and Crime Commissioner Elections next week*

Nottinghamshire Police

Elections for the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) will take place on Thursday 6 May. PCCs are elected by the public to hold Chief Constables and local police forces to account, effectively making the police answerable to the communities they serve.

The Elections team at the council are working on safety measures to protect everyone from Covid at polling stations, you can help keep this a safe event by bringing a mask with you, your own pen to use and by following the signage and any instructions.
