John,
Last week, the Biden administration announced it would be enforcing Donald Trump's 15,000 cap on refugee admissions to our country -- well short of the 62,500 Biden promised.
Within hours -- thanks to rebuke from progressive lawmakers, communities of color, and a majority of Americans -- Biden's administration promised to deliver a higher cap by May 15.
But there was one notable person who praised Biden's initial decision, John: Stephen Miller, the architect of Trump's family separation policy.
Miller even suggested it'd be “most popular” among Americans if Biden reduced the refugee cap to zero.
We know that Stephen Miller and Trump are still influencing decisions in Washington. Too many Democrats are concerned that a humane approach to immigration policy will hurt them at the polls.
As the Washington Post reports, “Despite Team Trump's relentless smears of refugees and other immigrants, polls show the public has grown more pro-immigrant in recent years -- with support reaching record highs.”
This support MUST translate into transformative policies that strengthen our communities and redefine what it means to be American. We want to keep pushing for policies that protect and support the AAPI community and all immigrant communities. But Stephen Miller recently launched a right-wing group to keep his policies alive in states nationwide, and right now we don't have the funds we need to fight back.
