The radicalization of the Republican Party didn't happen overnight. It's a product of years of increasingly extremist candidates winning bigger and more consequential elections.
As the Washington Post said in a recent column, “Republicans will keep up the craziness until they pay a real price.”
Donald Trump was a key figure in the racist birther movement that attacked Barack Obama. The Republican Party tolerated, if not outrightly embraced, the most fringe elements of its base until the fringe became the establishment.
Now, Republican members of Congress like Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene embrace QAnon, a conspiracy theorist group labeled as a domestic terror threat by the FBI. You have others like Andy Biggs and Paul Gosar who openly coordinated with the leaders of the January 6 Capitol insurrection. And you have senators like Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley who cravenly peddle the most despicable, racist rhetoric to serve their own political purposes.
It will only stop when we build a movement powerful enough to make them pay the political price for their vile behavior.
We need strong progressives to take over these seats. We need leaders who will speak loudly against the racist, xenophobic tropes that dominate the modern Republican Party.
