Dear John
It's not every day that XRUK has a win that feels THIS BIG.
On Friday, six magnificent rebels, charged with criminal damage against Shell HQ, were all found ‘not guilty’ in Southwark Crown Court.
Despite the judge saying they had no defence in law a jury took the extraordinary decision to clear them on moral grounds.
The brave activists represented themselves throughout the 10-day trial, and were supported every step of the way by experienced lawyers, funded by XRUK’s legal defence fund.
Can you help us give more XRUK activists access to invaluable legal advice as they put their liberty on the line for all of our futures?
The action was designed to shine a light on Shell’s part in the climate and ecological emergency. The fossil fuel giant has not only funded lobbying to hide the truth from the public for the last 30 years, it has also been implicated in murder, rape and torture, carried out by the Nigerian government to crush protests against Shell.
One of the defendants, Simon Bramwell, said: “It is a significant victory for the truth of these times, when despite the letter of the law, jurors can clearly see that a broken window is a just response to a breaking world.”
With more trials approaching and a huge summer of action planned, please help us get behind every rebel who is standing up against the destruction of our natural world.
Thank you.
Love and courage,
Sarah, XRUK Fundraising
