Hello Advocate,
This month, we are celebrating achievements. At the OCA Corporate Achievement Awards, we'll honor those who work tirelessly to continue the work of breaking bamboo ceilings. During Halloween season, we honor historical figures, fictional characters, or present-day leaders for giving AAPIs voice and visibility, through our Halloween costume contest, #MyAAPIHero!

Womxn's Initiative Program in Salt Lake City
|
|
Congratulations to our OCA-Utah chapter for hosting a successful Womxn's Initiative event! We had 60 college-aged Pacific Islander womxn attend the event, who left with raving reviews and reignited spirits about leadership and identity. See some of their feedback:
"Would love to do more interactive activities at future summits like the identity walk!"
"Events like this are wonderful for our PI community to build and strengthen our people."
Bring the Womxn's Initiative to your city today! Contact Programs Associate, Lumi Youm, at [email protected].

#MyAAPPIHero Costume Contest!
|
|
To keep the momentum of #AAPIRepresentation up, we're excited to host the first-ever AAPI Halloween costume contest! We hope you'll join us in highlighting just how many AAPI heroes, innovators, and role models there are. Let's celebrate the hard work AAPIs have done, and are still doing, to give our community a voice and visibility. Whether that's showing that the model minority is a myth or fighting laws that oppress us, AAPIs are extremely diverse in their accomplishments. We hope to see it represented through your costumes!
Post your costume, tag us on Instagram and Twitter and use the #MyAAPIHero, before or on October 31st! Voting process and prizes to be announced later this month.

Here's what we worked on in September:
+ AANAPISI Funding: OCA Advocates turned out in support of the FUTURE Act and MSI Funding! Our AANAPISI Week was a success with huge social media engagement and dozens of students sharing their stories. Because of our efforts, the FUTURE Act passed the House with bipartisan support. It's still up to us to keep up the momentum and force a vote in the Senate!
+ Racial Profiling: Our CEO, Executive Council members, and Policy Associate Maddie traveled to Silicon Valley last weekend to meet with business and congressional leaders on the racial profiling of Chinese Americans. You can find our full chapter toolkit with strategies and a timeline of events at http://bit.ly/racialprofilingtoolkit. Email Maddie if you'd like to be a part of future planning calls.
+ Immigration: We opposed HR1044/S386 The Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act, which unfairly redistributes green cards among immigrants without adding to the total number or reducing the decades-long family immigration backlog. The Act is currently up for vote in the Senate, so it's critical we call our Democrat and Republican Senators and tell them to oppose the bill for the following reasons:
- The bill would not fix the green card backlog faced by visa applicants. Instead, it would merely shift the backlog onto other nationals, reducing the diversity of the green card process.
- The bill offers a zero-sum approach that pits one group of immigrants against others to fight over a broken immigration system.
- A true solution would protect diversity by expanding the number of green cards available.
+ Health Access: OCA sponsored Representative Pramila Jayapal's (D-WA) Health Equity and Access Under the Law or HEAL Act for Immigrant Women and Families which expands Affordable Care Act coverage to DACA recipients and undocumented families and eliminates restrictive waiting periods for insurance enrollment. You can find more information in the attached fact sheet.
+ Civic Engagement: We are successfully working on voter toolkits for OCA Chapters across 7 different states to combat voter suppression! Thanks to all who emailed Maddie and is working with them to build resources and prep for 2020.
