A Message about George Floyd

 

My Fellow New Hanover County Democrats-

 

When the jury rendered the verdict in George Floyd’s murder trial on last Tuesday, there seemed to be a collective sigh of relief. I firmly believe that the jury arrived at the right conclusion based upon the evidence and arguments that were presented before it at trial.  However, there are still divisions within our country that have yet to heal or even be fully acknowledged. Those fissures and the societal conditions that led to Mr. Floyd’s death, unfortunately, continue to persist.  

 

It is important that we confront the issues that plague us rather than deflect, ignore, and minimize them in hopes that they will somehow dissipate on their own. It is my sincere hope that adequate reforms and measures are put in place to end the agonizing and painful history of unarmed Black Americans dying at the hands of law enforcement officers.  We must learn to recognize the full humanity that resides within each one of us if we are ever to truly live up to the ideals of liberty and justice for all.
