Friend,
I was raised by a family and community rooted in social, racial, environmental, and economic justice. And one lifelong Detroiter who embodied these values and this commitment to activism was Mama Lila Cabbil.
Mama Lila was a water warrior, a civil rights activist, a fighter for racial justice, a defender of democracy, and a transit advocate.
This coming week, we’re launching a fellowship program for young people in and around Detroit, ages 16-24―the 2021 Mama Lila Cabbil Youth Civic Engagement Fellowship―where young people will gain the skills to be effective organizers on a range of issues impacting or communities.
We’ll provide a $1,000 stipend for those who complete the program. And, we need your help funding this critical effort.
Can you donate to my Rooted in Community Leadership PAC today to directly fund and train up to 15 young people, ages 16-24 with a focus on BIPOC residents of the 13th congressional district?
Read more in my email below about how Mama Lila Cabbil influenced my work and how she led critical movements while staying rooted in community.
Thank you,
Rashida Tlaib

Friend,
Detroit has birthed movements, from labor rights to racial justice. And one lifelong Detroiter who influenced my activism and who had a lasting impact on our community was Mama Lila Cabbil.
Mama Lila influenced my work demanding water as a human right. She worked with civil rights icon Rosa Parks and passed along our values and our history through activism in the community.
Next week, to honor Mama Lila’s work and usher in the next generation of activists and leaders, we’re launching the 2021 Mama Lila Cabbil Youth Civic Engagement Fellowship.
Now through the end of the year, we’ll train young people ages 16-24―with a focus on BIPOC residents of Michigan’s 13th district―to become organizers on issues ranging from racial justice to defending democracy to water as a human right and more.
Donate today to fully fund this fellowship so we can provide each organizer with a $1,000 stipend, teach these young organizers about the issues we’re fighting for together, and connect those issues to our history.
