** MP slams Bredbury green belt-grabbing and urges residents to make objections known
------------------------------------------------------------

Denton and Reddish MP, Andrew Gwynne has expressed his anger and bewilderment at the formal submission of the planning application to massively extend the Bredbury Industrial Estate deep into the Tame Valley at the Tameside-Stockport border.

The MP has long objected to the proposal to remove the land out of the protection of greenbelt designation – a process currently not concluded as the work on the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework, the county’s new land-use plan, has been delayed.

As a consequence of the site remaining in greenbelt, the developer will have to set out ‘exceptional circumstances’ for the development to go ahead, and it may well be the scheme is called-in by the Secretary of State for a public inquiry before any final decision is made.

Andrew Gwynne MP said:

“The Tame Valley is precious to the people who live around it and it’s not up for grabs. This development would destroy the ambience of the neighbouring Hulme’s Wood and Haughton Dale Nature Reserves, and it would alter the openness of the V of the Valley forever.

“Worse, it would pile additional HGV traffic onto the A6017 Stockport Road as the low railway bridge at Bredbury prevents large-sided vehicles to access the M60 at junction 25.

“Added to all of this, the latest planning data for Greater Manchester shows there’s an oversupply of land for new industrial development. As such, there’s absolutely no case for the land at Bredbury to be taken. I would urge everyone to submit an objection to the plans to Stockport Council.”

To object, people should submit their comments formally by Monday 21 October, quoting the planning application reference: DC/074399

** It's time to rebuild Sure Start
------------------------------------------------------------

I’m sure at some point in your childhood, all of you spent some time building sandcastles. Hours of carefully crafting towers and turrets, moats and bridges, then decorating them with shells and pebbles. And then inevitably another kid comes over and just a few seconds of stamping and kicking leaves the castle you spent hours building in ruins. It is, after all, far quicker and easier to destroy something than it is to build it.

As it is with sandcastles, so it is with public services. Over years, the last Labour Government built services that improved the lives of people in this country only for the Tories (and the Liberal Democrats) to destroy them in a fraction of the time.

Among the many services that the Conservatives have decimated over the past 9 years, one cut that has proved most disastrous (and will prove even more so over time) is the butchering of Sure Start. For those who might not have heard of it, Sure Start was launched in 1998 by the late Tessa Jowell as a programme to give children the best possible start in life.

To do this, children’s centres were set up in the most deprived communities across the country. Working with parents and children, Sure Start centres gave families support, training and advice which led to all sorts of improvements. Various studies have shown the fantastic impact that these centres have had – for instance, a study this year found that Sure Start saved our NHS millions of pounds by reducing the number of people having to go to hospital.

And if you’re in any doubt about how Sure Start can transform people’s lives, look no further than a young mum from Stockport who left school with no qualifications. After using her local Sure Start Centre, Angela Rayner has gone on to become not just a fantastic MP, but a member of the Shadow Cabinet!

Unfortunately, under the Tories we have seen over 500 Sure Start centres closed and its funding slashed by two thirds. It’s heart-breaking to think of all the thousands of children and parents who are now without vital support.

Luckily, in Angela Rayner Labour has a Shadow Education Secretary who knows better than almost anybody else how this scheme can transform lives. That’s why the next Labour Government will rebuild and reinvigorate it, delivering a renewed Sure Start Plus.

After 9 years of neglect and Tory austerity, rebuilding won’t be easy – it will need time and patience – but we really do owe it to children and parents across Stockport and beyond to revive this vital service.

A huge thank you to the Friends of Reddish Vale Country Park for commissioning new cast iron artwork marking the River Tame as the historic boundary between Lancashire and Cheshire and inviting me to unveil them - they look amazing!
I dropped into a Macmillan Coffee Morning at Victoria Park Community Centre in Denton. There was delicious cake, great company and £366 raised for an amazing cause - well done everyone!

It was fantastic to speak at the Tameside Co-operative Summit in Dukinfield, bringing together the public, voluntary and community sectors. It's great news (as a lifelong cooperator) that Tameside Council is now officially a co-operative council. Thanks go to Council Leader Brenda Warrington for her vision on this!

📻 LISTEN: SCRAPPING UNIVERSAL CREDIT

I was asked to do various media slots following The Labour Party's weekend announcement about scrapping the disastrous Universal Credit system and replacing it with a fairer social security system.

This is my interview with Nick Robinson on the Today Programme on BBC Radio 4.
