We in DSA know that we can only win
the Green New Deal with a radicalized and organized working class.
Labor militancy won the original New Deal; if we pass the PRO
(Protecting the Right to
Organize) Act, we can achieve a
transformative Green New Deal. That's why we are organizing to pass the PRO Act. It will
strengthen unions, build working class power to organize on the job,
and boost our collective capacity to win a just transition to a green
economy for all.
To solve our climate and
economic crises, we need a Green New
Deal.
To win a Green New Deal, we
need mass worker power.
To build mass worker power, we
need to pass the PRO
Act.
This week, DSA's National PRO Act
Campaign got another senator to support the bill: Joe Manchin of West
Virginia! With only three senators left standing in the way of the
bill - Senators Sinema and Kelly of Arizona, and Senator Harris of
Virginia. If you'd like to help DSA National keep the pressure on,
go here to
volunteer for the campaign.
Here in Detroit, we'll be pushing
back our General Membership Meeting a week to
May 8th to make room for a huge May Day
Celebration that we're following with our own work to support
the PRO Act, along with continuing the work on our two main campaigns
- Defunding the Police and Landis for BOPC.

Now that the Detroit city budget fight is over (details on
the results coming soon), our chapter's Defund the Police campaign is
shifting focus to the Detroit city charter revision
ballot initiative that Detroiters will vote on in August. A vote on an
official chapter endorsement of this ballot initiative will be brought
before membership at the General Meeting on May
8. Please read the detailed proposal HERE and reply to this email if you are interested in
getting involved in the campaign!

In The End of
Policing, sociologist Alex S. Vitale argues that
policing as it is currently practiced cannot be reformed. Instead,
policing needs to be dismantled and completely rethought. In a word,
Vitale calls for defunding the police in order to refund the
community. - "The
Problem Not the Solution: Lessons from The End of
Policing" by

Detroit DSA is a 1200+ member funded
organization. We receive no money from outside sources so we can say
things like "Defund the Police" and "Abolish ICE" without losing
funding, and we will always act democratically in the interests of our
members and the working class! If you're able to, we ask that you make monthly
contributions as they more directly benefit our chapter. Thank you for
whatever amount you're able to contribute!
If you're ready to join us in the fight for
workers and all oppressed people, go to: dsausa.org/join and send your dues receipt to [email protected]
to get plugged in to the work we're
doing!
