Team,
Protecting public health isn’t just a policy goal for me — it’s personal.
As a physician, I’ve seen first-hand how high costs and heavy bureaucracy can lead to poor health care outcomes.
Too often, Americans with what’s considered good insurance coverage are still squeezed by unaffordable deductibles and premiums, heavy out-of-pocket costs, and rising prescription drug prices.
No family should have to choose between buying groceries and seeing their doctor or worry about whether or not a medical emergency might result in crushing lifetime debt.

While the American Rescue Plan delivered $1,400 stimulus checks to American adults and sent desperately-needed relief funds to state and local governments, it also included the Health Care Affordability Act, which lowers out-of-pocket insurance costs at a critical juncture in America’s health care debate.
Even before the pandemic, it was clear that additional work is required to strengthen the Affordable Care Act and bring down the cost of prescription drugs. NewDems are leading the way with innovative ideas to get the job done. A few quick ones:
- Creating state-level health care exchanges to cover some of the costliest medical claims.
- Incentivizing more states to participate in Medicaid expansions.
- Moving to an auto-enrollment system for the ACA to eliminate a barrier between Americans and their health care (by the way, I’ve authored legislation to start experimenting with this).
Thank you,
Rep. Ami Bera, MD
