Congresswoman Lesko Weekly Update

Good morning,

I had another busy week! This week, we had votes in the U.S. House of Representatives on a few of the Democrats’ priority bills. I attended a Border Security Caucus meeting where I heard from former United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Acting Director Ken Cuccinelli about cartels abusing children and how this is the worst border crisis in our history. I also had a meeting with the Portland Cement Association and North American Concrete Alliance to discuss infrastructure proposals and other issues affecting the cement and concrete industry, including carbon capture and other emerging technologies. I had the honor to speak at the American Gas Association’s monthly meeting about how Republicans and Democrats need to work together to come up with common-sense, affordable, and reliable energy policies. I also met with the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers to discuss product safety and energy proposals that impact appliance efficiency standards. I had a meeting with leaders from Toyota to discuss the use of hydrogen fuel cell technology in vehicles, and I met with Arizona’s rural electric co-ops to discuss providing reliable electricity to rural areas in Arizona. Finally, I flew to Tulsa, Oklahoma to attend a conference on America’s energy independence, reliability, and all-of-the-above energy plans. As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, I am committed to working on energy solutions that are affordable, reliable, and work for all Arizonans and Americans while also maintaining our energy security.

Democrats Vote to Undermine Our Border Security

Our nation is in the midst of an unprecedented border crisis, but this week, House Democrats put forward two immigration bills, H.R. 1333 and H.R. 1573, that do nothing to address the border crisis and instead undermine our security. The so-called “No Ban” Act requires any president to consult with Congress before halting travel from countries deemed a public health or national security threat. This eliminates a president’s ability to take decisive action to keep our nation safe. The so-called “Access to Counsel” Act requires Border Patrol agents to provide access to legal counsel within one hour, regardless of the time of day, to migrants detained at U.S. ports of entry. This imposes burdensome requirements on our Border Patrol agents when we have a border crisis on our hands. I voted against both of these measures.

D.C. Power Grab

House Democrats also pushed through H.R. 51, a bill that would make Washington, D.C. a state. This bill is just another political power-grab by the Democrats in Congress to stack the U.S. Senate in their favor. This bill is also unconstitutional. Our Framers chose to set Washington, D.C. apart from the other states so that the seat of the federal government would not give that particular state more power—they included this in the Constitution. Congress would have to pass a Constitutional amendment to make Washington, D.C. a state, not a mere statute such as H.R. 51. I could not support this measure to give more power to the swamp.

Legislative Update

I led a bipartisan letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas asking him to prioritize funding for the Cross-Border Tunnel Threat program and Border Patrol’s surveillance technologies that have been critical in finding these subterranean tunnels. These technologies are critical to preventing cartels from using tunnels to bring illegal narcotics across our southwest border.

I also introduced a bipartisan resolution to designate April 18, 2022, as National Amateur Radio Operators Day and to recognize the important contributions amateur radio operators have made to our nation. Amateur radio is the oldest form of digital communication and has brought people of various backgrounds together. In times of crisis and natural disasters, amateur radio is often used as a means of emergency communication when phone service has been impacted. I am proud to introduce this important resolution to honor the importance of amateur radio and the invaluable services amateur radio operators have made to our nation.

Encouraging Story

It was great to see this story about Stella Sgro, a World War II Army veteran, who celebrated her 100th birthday this week. Sgro served as a drill sergeant and air raid warden in the Army, and she also worked as a civilian in a factory making parts for the military. Friends and family held a parade for her to celebrate the occasion!

Casework Highlight

A constituent called our office concerned that they never received their 2019 tax return because the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) claimed that it was offset by a previous debt. The constituent claimed that this was not the case, so our office reached out to the IRS and they were able to adjust her account to correct the mistake in their system. The constituent has confirmed that they received a full refund shortly after our inquiry.

Coronavirus Casework Highlight

A constituent reached out to our office because she was having trouble getting a hold of the Department of Economic Security (DES). She had been approved for unemployment months prior but was still awaiting her payments. Our office reached out to DES regarding the constituent’s situation and within days the constituent received her payments, including retroactive payments.
