Words have power. And book bans such as the one happening now in Leander, Texas, pose a threat to the free exchange of ideas.

Last month, the Leander Independent School District in Texas banned six books, in response to parents' complaints. Now they're on the verge of removing more, targeting a range of works by women, people of color, and LGBTQIA+ writers. School administrators are also drafting a policy that will ban buying “inappropriate literature for the assigned students’ ages.”

So we rallied together Margaret Atwood, Jacqueline Woodson, Jodi Picoult, and other writers to demand the district reinstate their books. But this fight doesn’t end with this school district alone.
