Friends —

Black women are noticeably underrepresented in Congress. There are only 25 Black women currently serving in the House of Representatives and zero serving in the U.S. Senate.

And while we may have been a modest coalition within Congress, historically, we’ve remained a steadfast powerhouse within the chambers and organizing in our communities.

Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman to serve in the House of Representatives, blazing a path not only for myself but for countless Black women who aspire to elected office at all levels. Friend can you sign on to support a statue of Shirley Chisholm in the Capitol?

Shirley Chisholm led Brooklyn with fortitude and purpose, leaving a celebrated living legacy. She was the first Black woman elected as Secretary of the House Democratic Caucus Leadership and is the last Black woman to have held a leadership position within the Democratic Caucus. She played a critical role in developing SNAP and WIC, benefits that are still widely used today, and in 1972 became the first Black major-party candidate to run for President.

Shirley walked so that we could run. Folks, she deserves to be memorialized in the halls of the Capitol. Can you sign on today in support of a statue for Shirley Chisholm?

Fighting for you,

— Yvette
