Keith Ellison for Attorney General

John,

One of the first actions I took as Minnesota Attorney General was convening a working group on reducing deadly-force encounters with law enforcement.

In February 2020, after a year of gathering input from community members and law enforcement, we released our recommendations. Less than three months later, George Floyd was murdered.

One conviction cannot transform decades of mistrust and abuse and centuries of trauma. But hopefully, we can use this moment to finally shift the conversation: What if we just prevented this problem instead?

As I said on Tuesday, this week's verdict was not justice. We cannot bring George Floyd back. This verdict was accountability, which is the first step toward justice. The true cause for justice is in all of our hands.

People for whom the status quo has worked will tell you that change is a dream best deferred. But change is there to be made, and we must work together to ensure that it is.

One place to start is by calling on Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. It's time to ensure law enforcement everywhere is accountable to the communities they serve and end this cycle of violence that has plagued Black Americans in particular for far too long.

Will you stand with me and raise your voice? Add your name to tell Congress: Pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

Now is the time. Let’s get this done.

Thank you,

Keith Ellison
