Hello,
George Floyd and Daunte Wright should be alive today. While this week’s conviction of Derek Chauvin was a historic moment for our country, we cannot confuse accountability for justice.
There is not true justice as long as a chokehold, a knee on the neck, or a no-knock warrant is considered legitimate. There is not true justice as long as Black Americans are killed by law enforcement at more than twice the rate of white Americans. And, in the words of Daunte Wright’s mother, there is no true justice as long as her son isn’t coming home for dinner. Our work is not done.
We need to make policing more accountable and change training and standards, including banning chokeholds. The time is now for the Senate to take much-needed action by passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
This is the urgent task before us -- not for tomorrow, not for next year, but for now. And we won’t rest until justice -- true justice -- is done.
