John,
The convictions of now-former police officer Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd are a start on the long road to racial justice in policing. We still have, as the poet said, “miles to go before we sleep.” We have so much more work left to do -- and now is the time to act. This moment matters!
It is always a tragedy when a parent must bury their own child, as 20-year old Daunte Wright’s mother had to do this week. Stories like his totally unnecessary death are all too common in the Black and brown community, and it’s past time that the federal government adopts policing reforms that truly will put a stop to this.
The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, containing important police reforms, is currently in the Senate, having recently passed the House. Will you sign the petition to support the passage of this bill? Add your name now >>

Among its provisions, this bill will ban chokeholds, lower the criminal intent standard to convict law enforcement for misconduct, limit qualified immunity as a defense to liability in a private civil action against an officer, and authorize state attorneys general to issue subpoenas to investigate police departments for a pattern of discrimination.
The country erupted in protest following George Floyd’s death. This is what that protest movement was about. We must ensure that America makes good on the promises demanded in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. It is not enough to have convicted his killer. This bill will be George Floyd’s legacy, and we owe it to him.
The time is NOW to do the work to transform systems that have been based for way too long on institutional racism and injustice.
By signing this petition today, you will be putting pressure on the United States Senate to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and using your voice to have an impact.
