John,
Last week we saw another wave of violence against the AAPI community -- 4 Sikh Americans were among the 8 people killed in yet another mass shooting in Indianapolis.
The gunman targeted a FedEx facility known to be heavily populated by Sikh employees, many of whom were older members of the community.
We're calling for an investigation of anti-Sikh bias as a potential factor in the shooting -- because, unfortunately, we've seen this before. Across the AAPI community, our businesses are suffering, our community is hurting, and our elders are afraid to leave their homes. Sikhs in particular have suffered xenophobic violence in America for over a century, with many Americans incorrectly viewing this South Asian religious group as “agents of terrorism.”
I know that properly addressing this issue and creating change isn't going to be easy. But I've been truly inspired by the many people like you who have stood in solidarity with Asian Americans during these challenging times. And we're already making real change -- we've met with President Biden and we're working to pass the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act. I know that if we all continue to confront anti-Asian racism, we can keep our communities safe.
