John,
On Tuesday, a jury found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty on all counts for the murder of George Floyd nearly one year ago.
Regardless of the outcome of this trial, justice would never be truly served for George Floyd. Real justice would mean that George is still with us today. With his family and with his daughter.
I have George Floyd’s family and loved ones close to my heart this week as well as anyone who has lost a loved one to police violence and is still waiting for peace that will never come.
This is just one step in the long road toward justice. The fatal disregard for Black lives must be held accountable, and I am grateful for the men and women on that jury for doing their job. This opened the door for accountability.
But I’m not satisfied — this is the bare minimum and as favorable as this verdict was, it won’t stop the next extrajudicial killing of a Black person. It shouldn’t take a Black man being murdered on camera to see accountability.
Black Lives Matter. We’ve heard it again and again. It’s time our country means it.
In solidarity,
Barbara Lee
