People For Member, BREAKING NEWS: Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 51, the bill for D.C statehood, and sent it on to the Senate. This historic moment is only the second time in our history that this proposal has passed in at least one of the chambers of Congress. Now we have to keep working hard to make sure that every Senator knows how critical it is that they support D.C. statehood. SIGN NOW: Tell the Senate that they MUST pass the D.C. statehood bill! >> We have an unprecedented opportunity to finally give the more than 700,000 D.C. residents – a significant majority of whom are people of color – equal representation in the federal government. In addition to being a serious racial equity issue, D.C. statehood is a public safety issue. When violent insurrectionists attacked people on D.C. soil on January 6, the District’s government was powerless to send in their own National Guard without involving the Department of Defense. Preventing D.C from becoming a state is putting the city in danger. In the past year, the injustice of D.C.’s classification as a federal district rather than a state has become painfully clear. The city has struggled in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, when it was initially denied the full financial aid provided to states, and now as it struggles to obtain its fair share of the vaccine supply. And when the city rose up against systemic racism and violence in policing, the Trump administration called in the National Guard to crack down on protesters over the mayor’s objections. The people of our capital city deserve real self-determination, and now is our best-ever chance to help them become citizens of our 51st state. With the narrowest of Democratic majorities in the Senate and the racist Jim Crow-era filibuster rule still in play, we have our work cut out for us. D.C. statehood is a historically unpopular measure with the Right, and they’re preparing to fight it. Help us right this centuries-old wrong by getting D.C. statehood over the finish line. Thank you for fighting with us for self-determination and equity for all! In community, Sarah, Digital Campaigns Associate
