I’m sure you were as horrified as I was when the Trump campaign teamed up with the Michigan Republican Party to challenge the sanctity of Michigan’s presidential election last fall. The sad truth is that while the election is now certified, Michigan Republicans are just beginning to launch an all out assault on voting rights in our state.
As of March 24th, Republican State Senators had already introduced 39 bills related to elections. These bills include things like a ban on online absentee ballot requests and stricter voter ID requirements, they are flagrant attempts at restricting ballot access -- the ultimate goal being to disenfranchise voters and prevent Democrats from winning elections in Michigan.

While we can count on Governor Whitmer to veto these obscene pieces of legislation, a backhanded legislative maneuver could allow the Michigan GOP to ignore Governor Whitmer’s veto by gathering signatures from just 4% of Michigan voters. By proposing these bills as ballot initiatives that can be adopted into law via a simple majority in the legislature, the Michigan GOP can create veto-proof legislation with the support of a tiny minority of voters.
This is a huge threat to Democracy in our state and without control of the State House or State Senate, Michigan Democrats could find themselves powerless to stop it. This is just another reason why it’s imperative that we take control of the upper or lower chamber in 2022.
