Let?s keep up the good work on Covid-19

**A message from City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen:**

Cllr David Mellen, leader of Nottingham City Council

Our city is making huge progress with tackling Covid-19 and I?m extremely proud of the way everyone is pulling together to stay safe from this terrible virus. We now have a low number of cases in Nottingham, which is thanks to people following the rules of lockdown in January and February, and then sticking to Step One and Step Two of the Roadmap in March and April, plus more people being vaccinated.

It really does feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel for us, but, of course, only if we continue to follow the rules and take things slowly and safely.

I?m pleased that we have been able to reopen more of the city, such as shops and leisure facilities, and that people are sticking to the rules of ?hands, face, space? and only mixing with other households outdoors. We have to keep going ? if we are to progress along the roadmap to Step Three then we have to reduce the spread of Covid-19 as much as possible.

Please play your part in protecting our city: follow the rules, don?t mix households indoors, get the vaccine [ [link removed] ] if you are aged 45 and over, and do take regular tests. This week I was able to go on my first ward walk since the lockdown. It was great to be out in the sunshine and listening to local residents. I?d like to thank everyone I met in Sneinton for their good ideas as to how to make their neighbourhood an even better place to live. I am really looking forward to getting back to being out and about in my local Dales ward and across the city as the easing of restrictions allows.

Happy St George's Day!

Happy St George's Day!

St George?s Day celebrations are popular in Nottingham so I know people will once again be disappointed that the usual celebrations, including the parade, cannot go ahead for the second year because of current national restrictions.

However, to mark the occasion we have once again rolled out the country?s largest St George?s flag across the front of the Council House and the building will be lit up red this evening.

We can only hope that all our efforts with observing daily restrictions in our lives and taking the vaccination will mean that we can celebrate St George?s Day ? and many other things ? as usual next time.

Supporting businesses through the pandemic

Nottingham skyline

The Coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on our local economy and particularly so on our independent local businesses. Many have not been able to trade over the lockdowns and even as they open up, they?re faced with higher operating costs and lower footfall due to Covid restrictions.

Paying both government-backed and discretionary grants to local businesses over the pandemic has been a key element of the council?s work to boost the local economy, along with our support in helping people return to their high streets safely by encouraging them to follow public health guidelines, expanding or granting around 150 new pavement licenses and administering the cancellation of business rate payments.

Restart Grants of up to ?18,000 to help businesses cope with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic are now available and the council is supporting them to apply.? They are available for non-essential retail premises, hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gyms. *New era for Sherwood library?*

New era for Sherwood Library

I was really pleased on Wednesday that Planning Committee agreed the development of an improved Sherwood Library, on Spondon Street, complete with a retail unit, car park and much-needed housing for local people.

Since 2017, the Council has been consulting with local residents on redeveloping the site as the building was in a poor state of repair and library users deserved better. Ward councillors in Sherwood have hosted online meetings to hear the views of local people and their feedback has been reflected where possible in the final plans.

The development constitutes a ?6 million investment and will demolish and rebuild the site to create a new library, retail unit with seven flats above, as well as 12 houses, 22 flats and a public car park. Libraries are a great community hub and an incredible resource for information, education, entertainment and more. This new high-quality library will be central to the local community and I am excited to see it progress.

Full council next week

Council House

The Full Council AGM is being held on Monday and there will be the appointment of the new Lord Mayor and Sheriff for the next civic year. We will also be agreeing changes to the Council Executive and the allocation of responsibilities for Portfolio Holders. We will also be answering questions from residents and councillors, covering a range of topics such as what the re-opening of the castle will mean for the city, the safety of high-rise buildings in in light of Grenfell, tackling misogyny and the importance of registering to vote.

You can watch along from 2pm on Monday live on YouTube - www.youtube.com/user/NottCityCouncil [ [link removed] ]
