Insider's Report: This bad bill has been resurrected … again

Couple looking at finances

Just as millions of older Americans are beginning to feel some relief from the coronavirus pandemic, a small group of bipartisan Senators led by Senator Mitt Romney (UT) have quietly reintroduced the “TRUST Act.”

During the last Congress, the National Committee fought hard to defeat this bill. But Senator Romney and his colleagues believe now is the perfect time to resurrect this dangerous bill and take another shot at Social Security and Medicare.

As you may recall, the “TRUST Act” would pave the way for the creation of so-called “Rescue Committees” for the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds and set up these programs for massive cuts and radical reforms — all to help pay down soaring budget deficits. What’s worse, the committees would operate outside of regular order and their recommendations would be fast-tracked to the House and Senate floor … with limited public debate and with minimal input from workers and retirees like you.

Bottom line, this bill would give cover to lawmakers who want nothing more than to legitimize their war on Social Security and Medicare.

Today’s seniors rely on their earned benefits to stay healthy and stay out of poverty. Research indicates that tomorrow’s retirees will rely on these programs even more. The last thing American workers need is to have their future benefits threatened. If anything, they should be expanded.

That’s why the National Committee is working with our million+ members and supporters to wage an emergency fight — complete with petition, letter-writing and email campaigns, as well as legislative and media outreach — to stop this bill dead in its track.

Good Bills

The National Committee endorses the “For the People Act” (H.R. 1) which recently passed in the U.S. House of Representatives and contains a set of national mail-in voting standards guaranteeing no excuse mail-in voting.

The National Committee believes that the best system of voting is one that encourages the maximum number of legitimate votes cast, with safety and convenience being two essential pillars of such a system. Given the advantages and encouraging results of the nation’s vote-by-mail experience, and the paucity of evidence of voter fraud, the National Committee opposes efforts now taking place in many state legislatures to narrow vote-by-mail protocols and infringe on seniors’ rights to have a voice in their government.
