** President Biden's Earth Day Summit in a nutshell.
------------------------------------------------------------
National Review ([link removed]) (4/22/21) column: "President Joe Biden is convening a “virtual climate summit” — which is a very fancy thing to call a conference call — to be addressed by Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, among others. It comes as Biden announces a fuzzy plan to reduce U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions by more than half by the end of the decade (details to come . . . eventually) while congressional Democrats led by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) and Senator Ed Markey (D., Mass.) offer up a plan to put 1.5 million Democratic activists on the federal payroll by creating a 'Civilian Climate Corps.' It would be difficult to organize all of this by order of seriousness, though the character of the Civilian Climate Corps proposal is suggested by Senator Markey’s infomercial-style salesmanship, promising that the program would 'combat the interlocking crises of the moment — climate change, racial injustice, a
global pandemic, and income inequality.' One expects him to promise that it doubles as a salad spinner and makes fresh-pressed juice, too. This is the classic Democrat approach to complex problems: 'Give us money to give to the people who support us politically.' On the issue of climate, we can expect this approach to produce the same great results it has achieved with the public schools in St. Louis."

** "The fate of any agency action on climate could come down to which way a federal court decides to load the dice on deference in disposing of the inevitable lawsuits. The Biden administration may not be able to comply with its renewed Paris commitments—even if it wants to."

This is what putting workers first actually looks like.

(4/22/21) reports: "Reps. Lauren Boebert and Chip Roy launched an effort Wednesday to force a House vote on reversing President Biden's oil and gas executive orders that the GOP lawmakers panned as detrimental to the economy and America's energy independence. Boebert, R-Colo., and Roy, R-Texas, launched a discharge petition to revoke Biden's moratorium on new oil and gas leases on federal lands and his decision to stop the construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline. 'President Biden's assault on American's energy production is causing the skyrocketing gas prices that we're seeing at the pump,' Boebert told Fox News in an interview on Wednesday. 'Thousands have lost their jobs and tens of thousands will be losing their jobs. Meanwhile the rest of the world, they're laughing at us as we purchase more energy from countries that hate our guts.' Boebert continued: 'I wanted to take a stand. We've got to stop putting hardworking Americans last.'"
Climate signaling is nice, but these guys still have to pay their bills somehow.

(4/22/21) reports: "Outdoor retailer REI calls climate change 'the largest existential threat facing our members’ enjoyment of life outdoors and the survival of REI Co-op.' The company has pledged to cut its planet-warming emissions in half over the next decade, roughly in line with the commitment made by President Biden at an Earth Day summit Thursday. But that isn’t stopping REI from using its eco-friendly image to help Ford promote gas-guzzling SUVs. In a series of ads and videos sponsored by the carmaker, the latest of which was released this week, REI chronicles the journey of four cyclists traversing a 220-mile route through Arizona known as the Sky Islands Odyssey. The videos feature plenty of glamour shots and praise of Ford’s Bronco Sport as it accompanies the bikers through off-road desert terrain, loaded with gear. 'The Ford Bronco Sport is a really good option for this — it has high clearance, it has four-wheel drive,' Len Necefer, one of the featured cyclists, says in a video
titled, 'Making the Bronco Sport Our Ultimate Outdoor Rig.' Leaning against the trunk of the compact SUV, Necefer explains how the vehicle enables the bikers to have 'a little bit more cush ride of an experience.'"
Do you guys think Earth Day is about cleaning up the environment?

(4/23/21) column: "‘The interesting thing about the Green New Deal is it wasn’t originally a climate thing at all… Do you guys think of it as a climate thing? Because we really think of it as a how-do-you-change-the-entire-economy thing.’ So said Saikat Chakrabarti, former chief of staff for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and generally acknowledged author of the Green New Deal. Sometimes it is wise to find out what ideas’ originators actually think. That is true for documents that have lit up our lives, such as the US Constitution, as well as for those that have darkened them, such as Mein Kampf. This is true as well for the nascent Green New Deal, which President Joe Biden has essentially adopted as his own. Even if Congress fails to pass it entirely, Biden will seek to impose many of its goals through administrative diktats on gas-powered cars, land use, airplanes, any form of fossil fuel and nuclear power. Green New Dealers will also extend the welfare state, including to those who choose not
to work."
