While we welcome the news that the Biden Administration will reassess the refugee cap by May 15, there are already more than 30,000 individuals who have been conditionally approved by the U.S. government to be resettled to the U.S. An additional month delay is needless and harmful — especially given that deliberations between the agencies, Congress, and the White House concluded over two months ago.
This waiting game has real, tragic consequences for vulnerable people who have fled war and persecution.
Mauwa (30 years old) and her four children, refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, were at the airport — ready to be resettled in the U.S. — when she found out their flight was cancelled due to President Biden's delay in signing the presidential determination, the official order by which presidents set the number of refugees to be welcomed into the country each year. |
