Race to the Bench: 26 May 2021, 5:30pm – 7pm

It has been just over a year since JUSTICE published Increasing Judicial Diversity: An Update <[link removed]> , which shone a particular light on the continued appointment of an overwhelmingly white senior judiciary.

This members’ event <[link removed]> will discuss why racial diversity in the senior judiciary matters, the obstacles to the appointment of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic judges, and will explore what can be done to increase the appointment of quality candidates from racial minorities.

Our panel includes Head of Equality and Inclusion for the judiciary Dame Ingrid Simler , Nkumbe Ekaney QC , Maya Sikand QC , and HHJ Anuja Dhir QC , JAC Commissioner, and will be chaired by Andrea Coomber , Director of JUSTICE.

This virtual event is for JUSTICE Members only – become a member today <[link removed]> and book your free ticket.

Our latest work
On 8 April 2021 we launched our latest Working Party –   A Parole System fit for purpose <[link removed]>.
It will examine the role, powers, and procedures of the Parole Board and wider system, to ensure that no one is detained longer than is necessary and lawful. The parole system has not benefited from a comprehensive, independent review in recent years. Backlogs and delays have plagued the system. The process can be difficult to navigate, raising human rights concerns around participation and procedural fairness.
Those detained by the State must be afforded appropriate access to justice to enforce their rights. This is fundamental to upholding the rule of law. The decision-making body which determines continued detention must carry out this role fairly, independently and effectively.

This Working Party will take place alongside the Government’s own Root and Branch Review of the Parole System, announced in October 2020. The Working Party’s findings will be used to inform JUSTICE’s response.
